Making Reloads On A Press

Reloading Ammunition
 By Mike Coviello (Tanner)

Primers are sometimes installed incorrectly. It's rare, but once in a while you will find one installed sideward or even upside down. The most common installation mistake is not to seat them fully and they stick out a little.

Small Pistol Primer Installed Wrong

This is not really a bad primer, just one that was installed incorrectly into a 9mm Luger casing. Reloading mistakes do happen. When I was installing this one into the casing something didn't feel right when I pulled down on the handle of my Lee Turret Press. This is what I ended up with. A loaded 9mm case with the primer turned sideward. The only thing left to do was to disassemble the round and reuse the parts.

How Does A Primer Work?
What is it and how does it work? Here is a brief explanation of how it works with lots of pictures.
Wolf Primers Review
The nice thing about these is their cost. They are cheapest ones (or at least were the cheapest when I bought them) you can buy. I have reloaded approximately 10,000 rounds of 9mm Luger ammunition using these. I purchased them because they were available and cheap. They all worked great (with a few FTFs).

Primer with indent that failed to fire. 9mm Luger Primer Failure (Misfire/Dud)
Pictorial analysis of a reloaded 9mm Luger round of ammunition that misfired at the shooting range. The misfired 9mm Luger round was photographed, weighed, disassembled and examined in an effort to determine the cause of the misfire.
The Dog Ate My Primer
The other day I found my dog chewing on something in my reloading room. I made him spit it out. I was a little horrified when it turned out to be..

Small Pistol Primer Testing & Review
I crushed some of these in a vise to see if they would fire (detonate) because I reload ammunition and want to have a better understanding of how they work. All safety precautions were taken.
Tulammo Primers
Tulammo Primers Review
I recently purchased 20,000 Tulammo (also known as Tula) small pistol primers from Powder Valley (10,000 for me and 10,000 for my friend). I usually buy Wolf (because of the cheap price) but Powder Valley does not offer them anymore. In their place they offer TulAmmo. They are also Russian made and are very cheap.
Wolf and Tula primers Wolf Verses Tula (Tulammo) Primers
At first glance Wolf and Tula seemed the same. I read somewhere in a forum that both are Russian made and that they are made in the same manufacturing plant (unsubstantiated). The forum writer went on to say that they were likely the same exact product only with different brand names. After buying and using both, I found this not to be true.

Can you ship both in the same box under one hazardous materials fee when you order them online? The answer appears to be yes.
